Assimilation – تأقلم

Acrylic on moto helmet, Acrylic on Drywall
62"x62"x62"

Assimilation was an ongoing performance project navigating the boarder of cultural identities.

Two distinct landscapes I lived in; Beirut, Lebanon and Downtown, Los Angeles, United States are painted with acrylic on home drywall. The olive tree branch is delicately rendered behind my spine. No wall blocking me from entering the landscape in front of me. I attach myself to the view of the Ritz Carlton and the clock tower in Downtown Beirut, fixtures for me to find my location in Lebanon and America. I break down the landscapes with a moto helmet. One side is painted with the American Flag, the other the Lebanese flag. Crashing the flags with there opposing landscapes the walls crumble on to my head and body.In September 2016, I went back to Lebanon refreshing the landscapes in my memories. I repaired the walls. Painted new landscapes and kept bashing till the walls crumbled once more.
